Quick answer
Snow in Hokkaido is most reliable from late December to early March. On a first winter trip, stay in Sapporo and add Otaru and a day of snow play; families who want to ski can add Niseko or Rusutsu. With 5 to 7 nights you can see Sapporo, Otaru and a ski resort or Asahiyama Zoo without rushing. Hokkaido is big and its sights are far apart, so a car lets you see much more.
- Sapporo Snow Festival: 4 to 11 February 2027
- Otaru Snow Light Path: early to mid February (check the official dates when they are announced)
- Lunar New Year: 6 February 2027. Sights and hotels are busier for about a week
- Ramadan is expected to begin around 8 February 2027, so many Muslim families travel in January or early February

Where to go in Hokkaido in winter
Sapporo
- The Sapporo Snow Festival: huge snow and ice sculptures line Odori Park, lit up in the evening
- Getting around: the subway and long underground shopping streets mean you can move around the city on cold days without walking outside
- Hotels for Snow Festival week: they fill up months ahead, so book as soon as your dates are fixed
Otaru
- A canal town about 40 minutes from Sapporo by train
- The Otaru Snow Light Path: in February, candles are lit along the canal and around the town
- Walking: the streets are steep and often icy, so wear shoes with a good grip
Niseko and Rusutsu: skiing and snow play
- The snow: Hokkaido’s powder snow is famous around the world
- With children: the big resorts have ski schools for children and snow play areas with sledges
- Getting there: about 2 hours by car from Sapporo or New Chitose Airport
Asahiyama Zoo (Asahikawa)
- The penguin walk: a winter favourite, when the penguins walk in a line across the snow. It usually runs from around late December, once the snow has settled, to around mid March. In midwinter it is held twice a day, at 11:00 and 14:30, and from March once a day at 11:00 (it depends on the snow)
- Getting there: about 1.5 hours from Sapporo by limited express train. Plan a full day
Furano and Biei
- Wide, white landscapes. The roads are hard in winter, so go with a tour or a private car
A first time in snow with children
- Dress in layers: a thin thermal base layer, a fleece, and a waterproof jacket on top. Don’t forget gloves, a hat and a neck warmer
- Boots: winter boots with a good grip. You can also buy them in Japan
- Keep the first day short: until children get used to the cold, stay outside for 1 to 2 hours, then warm up indoors before going out again
- It is warm indoors: airports and hotels are well heated, so wear layers that are easy to take off
- Prepare well for the cold: layers, waterproof gloves, a hat and boots with a good grip. Heat packs (kairo) are sold at convenience stores
- Leave time around your flights: in January and February, snow can cancel flights. Spend the night before your flight home in Tokyo or Osaka
- Don’t drive on snowy roads: a private car or transfer is safer
- Short days: it gets dark soon after 16:00, so start sightseeing in the morning
Getting there and getting around
- From Tokyo: about 1.5 hours by plane from Haneda to New Chitose Airport
- Hokkaido is big: the sights are far apart. Sapporo to Niseko is about 2 hours by car, Asahikawa (Asahiyama Zoo) about 1.5 hours, and Furano and Biei are further still. Trains and buses are infrequent with many changes, so on a winter trip with children and heavy luggage, the travelling alone can wear you out
- A car makes it easier: but driving on snow is dangerous, so rather than driving yourself, we recommend a private driver. You travel from hotel to hotel with your luggage and can stop at sights on the way
- Easy by train: Sapporo to Otaru (about 40 minutes) and Sapporo to Asahikawa (about 1.5 hours by limited express)
For Muslim travellers
- Halal food: Sapporo has fewer halal restaurants than Tokyo or Osaka. There is, for example, a Sapporo branch of Shinjuku-tei, a halal-certified wagyu ramen restaurant. Plan your meals ahead, or use our free lists of about 150 halal restaurants and mosques
- Prayer: Sapporo Mosque is at Kita 14-jo Nishi 3-chome in Kita-ku, about 3 minutes on foot from Kita-Juni-Jo subway station
- At the ski resorts: restaurants on the slopes rarely show halal labels, so bring snacks
Sample plans
5 nights: Sapporo (3 nights, with the Snow Festival or the city and a day trip to Otaru) → Niseko or Rusutsu (2 nights, skiing and snow play)
7 nights: Tokyo (2 nights) → Sapporo (3 nights, with day trips to Otaru and Asahiyama Zoo) → Niseko (2 nights)

- Family rooms at ski resorts: 3 months ahead
- New Year: everything fills up early, so book as soon as you can
