Almost every Gulf family I plan a trip for asks about the visa first, and the answer is rarely the same for two families, even neighbors in the same building. Japan’s visa rules depend on your nationality, not on your UAE residence. This guide starts with the nationality table, then covers where to apply, what it costs, how long it takes and what to bring, with every figure checked against official sources.

eVISA or Sticker Visa?

For a single-entry tourist trip, Japan issues an eVISA, an electronic visa. There is no sticker in your passport. At check-in, you show a “Visa issuance notice” on a phone or tablet.

The eVISA has clear limits:

• Single entry, tourism only, up to 90 days.
• Valid for 3 months from issue. It cannot be extended.
• You must travel on the same passport you used to apply.
• It cannot be used to visit relatives or friends, or for business. Those purposes need a sticker visa.
• You cannot apply for a multiple-entry visa as an eVISA.

How to Apply for a Japan eVISA From the UAE, Step by Step

Japan’s eVISA website is open for direct applications from some countries, but residents of the UAE apply through an accredited agency, which in the UAE is VFS Global. The steps:

1. Check that you need a visa: use the nationality table above
2. Choose your dates: you can apply up to 90 days before you enter Japan. Book your flights and hotels, because you need the booking and an itinerary
3. Prepare your documents: see the checklist below
4. Book a VFS appointment at the centre for your emirate (Dubai or Abu Dhabi)
5. Submit your application and pay AED 365 visa fee plus AED 110 VFS service fee, in person or through an authorized representative
6. Wait for the decision: at least 8 to 10 working days, longer if something needs checking
7. Receive your “Visa issuance notice” and keep it on your phone. At check-in and on arrival in Japan, you show it on a phone or tablet with internet access

Where to Apply: Dubai or Abu Dhabi?

Since 1 August 2024, the Consulate-General of Japan in Dubai no longer accepts applications directly (diplomatic and official visas excepted). VFS Global handles all intake. Which VFS centre you use depends on where you live.

• Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah: the Dubai centre, under the Consulate-General of Japan in Dubai.
• Abu Dhabi, including Al Ain, or an Abu Dhabi residence visa: the Abu Dhabi centre, under the Embassy of Japan. If you live in Abu Dhabi on a residence visa from another emirate, VFS asks for proof of living there: a bank or credit card statement of daily spending for the last three months, a tenancy contract and a TAQA bill.

You book an appointment and submit the application at the centre, either in person or through an authorized representative. VFS also runs a temporary enrolment location in Sharjah, open on Fridays only, for an extra charge. The Embassy of Japan in Abu Dhabi

The embassy in Abu Dhabi and the consulate in Dubai do not accept visa applications at their counters. Since 1 August 2024, you apply through VFS Global, by appointment, and VFS sends your application on for you, so you don’t need to visit the embassy. What It Costs

• Visa fee (general nationalities, single entry): AED 365, from the Consulate-General’s fee table effective 1 July 2026. The multiple-entry fee in the same table is AED 730.
• VFS service fee: AED 110 including 5% VAT, charged to every applicant.
• Payment: in AED at the time of application, by cash or credit card, according to VFS.
• No refund after issue. An eVISA that you do not use is not refunded.

VFS notes that fees are based on the current exchange rate and may change without notice, so check the VFS page before you apply.

How Long It Takes, and How Early to Apply

• Earliest: you can apply up to 90 days before you enter Japan.
• Processing: at least 8 to 10 working days from submission (weekends and holidays announced by the Embassy excluded). If documents are incomplete or extra checks are needed, it can take 3 to 4 weeks.
• Last-minute: the Consulate-General’s guidance says it cannot accept applications when the flight is within 2 weeks of the application date (document dated May 2024).

A practical rule: book your VFS appointment at least a month before you fly, and more during peak seasons.

Documents Checklist (Tourism, Nationalities Other Than UAE and China)

Document lists change, so confirm against the current VFS checklist before you go. The list below follows the Consulate-General’s short-stay guidance dated May 2024.

• Visa application form, signed by the applicant
• Original passport (at least 2 blank pages) and a copy. The passport and Emirates ID must have at least 6 months of validity when you apply.
• Copy of your UAE residence visa or Emirates ID
• One photo taken within the last 6 months, on a white background
• Certificate of employment stating your position and monthly or annual income (owners and partners need a company letter)
• Your bank statement for the last 3 months
• Itinerary in Japan, on the Consulate-General’s form (flight dates, daily activities, accommodation and contacts)
• Copy of your flight booking

If you are a housewife, student or not employed, you add your sponsor’s documents: employment certificate, bank statement if the sponsor pays, a letter of guarantee, a no-objection letter for travel, copies of the sponsor’s passport and residence visa, and proof of the relationship such as a marriage or birth certificate. Domestic helpers have a separate checklist.

Traveling With Family

• Family members who travel together on the same itinerary can apply together on the Japan eVISA system. In the UAE, the application is submitted at the VFS centre, so follow the centre’s instructions for the group.
• For a minor traveling with a parent, no authorization letter is needed. If the child travels without a person with parental authority, bring a parental consent form.

Common Mistakes

• Passport validity or blank pages are not enough.
• Applying at the wrong centre, for example an Abu Dhabi resident applying in Dubai.
• Dates on the itinerary that do not match the flight booking.
• Applying too close to the departure date.
• Applying earlier than 90 days before entry.

If Your Application Is Refused

The Japanese government does not give the reason for a refusal. You cannot apply again for the same purpose within 6 months.
