Quick answer

Osaka is one of the easiest cities in Japan to eat halal. Most halal restaurants are in Namba, Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi, a short walk from each other, so you can eat between sights. You can have halal wagyu, ramen and even Osaka’s own okonomiyaki. Restaurants change, so check the halal status before you go.

Halal certified, Muslim-friendly or pork-free?

Not every restaurant with a halal sign means the same thing. Halal certified means a certification body has checked the meat and the kitchen. Muslim-friendly usually means no pork and no alcohol in the cooking, without certification. Pork-free only means there is no pork on the menu; the seasoning can still contain mirin or cooking sake. Our guide to halal food in Tokyo explains the differences and the hidden alcohol in Japanese food.
