When people in Dubai find out I am Japanese, the first question is almost always the same: “How much does a trip to Japan cost?” I was born in Japan and lived there for 26 years before moving to Dubai. This guide is my honest answer, with real numbers for a week in Japan.
How much does a week in Japan cost?
A week in Japan from the Gulf, staying in 4-star hotels and flying economy, costs from about AED 12,000 per person. With 5-star hotels and business class, plan on from about AED 33,000 per person. It is a rough figure covering flights, hotels, food and getting around. Japan’s public holidays, the cherry blossom and autumn leaves seasons, the hotel you choose and when you book will all change the total.

Children’s fares and sharing a room can bring the family total down, but many hotels in Japan charge per person, so check when you book.
How much does a day in Japan cost?
Not counting your hotel, plan on about ¥14,000 (about AED 330) per person a day: about ¥10,000 for food and sights and about ¥4,000 for getting around. A simple day of ramen, trains and free sights costs less; a day with a fine dinner, taxis and theme park tickets costs more.
Where the money goes
Most of the cost of a trip to Japan goes on flights and hotels, and the time of year changes both. Here is what each one costs.
Flights
A return flight from Dubai to Tokyo costs from about AED 6,200 per person in economy and from about AED 23,500 in business class. Fares also rise around Eid, school holidays and Japan’s public holidays. From Doha, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh and other Gulf cities, the price depends on the airline and route.
Direct flights from the UAE to Japan: Emirates flies non-stop from Dubai to Tokyo (Haneda and Narita) and Osaka (Kansai), and Etihad flies daily from Abu Dhabi to Tokyo Narita. Hotels
A 4-star hotel in a good location costs about ¥35,000–60,000 per room per night (about AED 810–1,400). 5-star hotels and suites cost more, and a high-end ryokan with dinner and breakfast costs from about ¥25,000 to over ¥150,000 per person per night.
Many hotels and ryokan in Japan charge per person, not per room. The more people stay in a room, the higher the price, so hotel costs often come out higher than travellers from the Gulf expect. When you compare prices, check whether the rate is per person or per room.
Season
Hotels across Japan tend to cost more at these times of year:
- Cherry blossom season (late March to early April): in popular cities, hotels can cost 40–100% more than usual.
- Autumn leaves season (mid to late November): hotels in popular areas often cost 15–60% more than usual.
- Golden Week (29 April to 5 May): a run of national holidays when much of Japan takes time off and travels at once.
- Summer holidays and Obon (late July to August, busiest in mid-August): schools are off, and in mid-August many people travel back to their family hometowns.
- New Year (about 28 December to 3 January): Japan’s biggest family holiday, when many people travel and some businesses close.
- Long weekends and big events: three-day weekends with a Monday public holiday, Christmas, Lunar New Year (late January or February, when many visitors come from other parts of Asia), festivals and large concerts can push prices up for a few days.

Is Japan expensive once you’re there?
No. Once you land, Japan gives you more for your money than most visitors expect. Having lived in both places, I would say everyday costs in Japan are lower than in Dubai.
To give you a feel for how much less things cost, here are some everyday prices in Dubai and Tokyo:

Prices from Livingcost, updated June 2026, converted at 1 US dollar to 3.67 dirhams. Cafés and quick meals cost noticeably less in Tokyo, and bottled water costs about the same.
- Meals: a dinner at a popular, slightly upscale restaurant costs from about ¥10,000 per person (about AED 230). An excellent bowl of ramen or a set lunch costs around ¥1,000–1,500 (about AED 23–35).
- Taxis: more expensive than in Dubai. In Tokyo, the fare starts at ¥500 for the first 1.096 km, then rises by ¥100 for every 255 m, with 20% extra from 10 pm to 5 am.
- Trains and subways: the cheapest way to get around. A ride within central Tokyo usually costs about ¥150–300 (about AED 3.5–7), and trains are clean and punctual.
- Water and tea: restaurants serve them free and refill them without asking.
- No tipping: the price on the bill is the price you pay. Service is excellent everywhere, and staff will usually return any money you leave on the table.

Other costs to add: visa and insurance
Besides flights and hotels, two smaller costs depend on your passport and your needs, so add them to your budget before you book.
- Visa: the cost depends on your passport. UAE nationals with an ePassport, and Qatari nationals who register their ePassport with a Japanese embassy, need no visa, so there is nothing to pay. Saudi nationals apply online for Japan’s eVISA, and Kuwaiti, Omani and Bahraini nationals apply at the Japanese embassy in their country; since 1 July 2026 a single-entry visa costs about ¥15,000 (about AED 350). - Travel insurance: hospitals in Japan are excellent, but treatment is not free for visitors, so include insurance with good medical cover in your budget.

Credit cards are accepted at city hotels, department stores, most restaurants and convenience stores. Some small restaurants, shrines, temples and places in the countryside take cash only, so carry some yen. For trains, a rechargeable IC card is the easiest way to pay.
Do I need to tip in Japan?
No. In restaurants, taxis and hotels, the price on the bill is the price you pay. If you leave money on the table, staff will often come after you to return it.
